Who We Are
When you turn on the lights or plug in your favorite gadgets, you’re probably not thinking about where the electricity comes from. But you might be surprised to learn that the type of electric utility you’re served by makes a big difference in the quality of life in your community.
One type of electric utility, known as investor-owned utilities, are owned by large corporations and their shareholders. Another type of utility, known as electric cooperatives, are private utilities owned by consumers.
Home power utilities are unique. These locally owned utilities, sometimes known as municipal utilities or public power utilities, are owned by the cities, towns or citizens that they serve. Their friendly local employees provide reliable electricity and personal service. Their not-for-profit rates and community investments keep money in the local community. And decisions are always made at public meetings where everyone has a voice.
Florida’s 34 municipal electric utilities created this website, so you can learn more about where your power comes from and why it matters.
